A controversial East End murder case will be examined tonight (Thursday, June 18) in a Channel 4 documentary.
The Accused will feature bombshell fresh evidence obtained by a Newsquest reporter, which casts doubt on the conviction of Jason Moore.
Jason is serving life in prison for the stabbing of Robert Darby outside a Gants Hill pub in 2005.
He was convicted after a single eyewitness picked him from a photo line-up seven years after the crime. No other evidence implicated him.
But when the witness was tracked down years later by our reporter, he said he had been “drunk” when he witnessed the incident and was not sure he had identified the right man.
Tonight’s episode is the first in a four-part series for Channel 4, each looking at a different suspected miscarriage of justice.
It features contributions from both Jason’s family and Robert’s.
Unusually, the family of the suspected victim are equally convinced of Jason’s innocence and help to run the Free Jason Moore campaign.
Robert was stabbed to death outside The Valentine pub in Perth Road in August 2005.
Jason has always maintained he was sat in a parked car and witnessed Robert fighting with another man.
Two eyewitnesses told police on the day that the man who fought with Robert was around 5’10 with short or cropped hair and wore a blue zip-up jacket.
Jason is 6’4 in bare feet, had his hair in thick curtains and CCTV from the day showed him neither wearing nor carrying a blue jacket.
His photo was put in line-ups for both witnesses at the time and neither recognised him.
But then, in an unexplained breach of best practice, police called one of the witnesses back seven years later and showed him Jason’s photo in a second line-up.
This time, he picked Jason out. As a direct result, Jason was charged with Darby’s murder.
In 2013, a jury at the Old Bailey convicted him. He was jailed for life with a minimum of 18 years.
‘The Accused’ will air at 10pm on Channel 4 on Thursday, June 18.
