Battersea has shared an appeal for more Londoners to become foster carers to help dogs and cats in need of a forever home.

The charity is looking for carers that can provide a temporary home for a dog or cat while taking an active role in finding them a loving family of their own.

Foster carers will be able to give life-changing support to cats and dogs that are in need of a second chance.

Not only do foster carers care for animals that are waiting to find their family but it also gives Battersea a chance to see how animals behave in a home environment to help find them their ideal new homes.

Foster carers have helped animals like five-year-old blind dog Stevie who lost both his eyes.

Arriving at Battersea as a stray Stevie was very nervous and constantly bumping into things.

But when a foster carer took Stevie in foster to help him adapt to his new lifestyle in a home environment he grew in confidence and adjusted to home life in record time.

Stevie's foster carers Amy and Jack shared: "While with us, Stevie transformed from a nervous dog to such a happy and confident character.

"Once he had developed an understanding of our home, he was strutting around like he owned the place! He was such a good boy and we made so many special memories with him.

“As we travel frequently and have lots of social plans, we cannot commit to a dog permanently, but being a Foster Carer at Battersea has given us the opportunity to spend time with dogs and meet so many sweet souls who need a second chance. Battersea provides everything from training to food, bedding and poo bags!"

After being cared for by Battersea’s Foster Carers for almost two months, Stevie was ready to find a new home and was swept up by his loving new owner.
