Her daughter Meleka, 24, and her friend Danielle Andrews, 24, decided to raise money for the hospice through two events.

The first was a fun day which took place at the Ascension church, in Collier Row, on August 3. It raised £740, with stalls, raffles, a craft fayre and bouncy castles for the children.

A quiz night and raffle also took place at Harold Hill Community Centre, in Gooshays Drive, on August 17, which was also successful raising £686.

Danielle, of Penzance Road in Harold Hill, said: “We had a fantastic turn out for both events and raised a very respectable sum of money for the hospice.

“We were overwhelmed by the generosity of people, especially those with smaller local businesses.”

This is not the end of the fundraising either, Meleka will be doing a sponsored skydive later in the year to raise more money for Saint Francis Hospice.
