An A-level student is spreading her passion for maths by volunteering to tutor those younger than her.

Zeena Maravala has recently completed her A-levels, the results of which are due today (Thursday), and she hopes to go to Warwick University to study maths.

But a year ago, the 18-year-old was given the option of taking time out of her busy exam schedule and teaching younger pupils, which she accepted.

After a year of one-hour weekly sessions, some with a group and some one-to-one, she is reaping the rewards of her hard work.

Her voluntary tutoring has earned her a nomination for the Recorder/Rotary Young Citizen Award, sponsored by Exchange Ilford.

The Seven Kings High School pupil said: “It’s a fantastic feeling when I see the students progressing with their maths.

“I know a lot of people can find the subject difficult and being able to show them a way of simplifying things really gave me a sense of satisfaction.”

Zeena, of Grange Road, Ilford, said she would like to continue tutoring youngsters in maths, as well as helping her uncle, Loxford ward Labour Cllr Filly Maravala, during his campaign before the Redbridge Council election.

“I’d love to be a maths teacher in the future which is why I would like to carry on tutoring,” she said.

“There was one boy who was preparing to take his GCSEs and I helped him to revise before them.

“I am not sure how he has done because the results are not yet out, but I’m sure he has done well.”

Cllr Maravala said: “She is an exceptionally bright and caring young woman who goes out of her way to help others.

“She is always conscious of people around her and wanting to give back to society.”
