Murder rates in Redbridge are among the lowest in east London, according to newly compiled police records.

In the past five years to September 2011, there have been a total of 14 murders within the borough, the same as in Bexley and neighbouring Havering.

The latest murder, last month, was that of Harjinder Singh Bhurji, who died in Clayhall in September after an attempted carjacking went wrong.

No one has yet been charged in connection with his death.

Just a month before that, Kelvin Chibueze lost his life in Ilford after attending a party and last week a second person was charged with his murder.

In Barking and Dagenham there have been 20 murders and Newham has had 56.

The safest borough in London was Richmond-upon-Thames with just one murder. Lambeth in south London topped the chart with 79 murders.

Across London there have been 837 murders in the past five years according to the data, which has been compiled by the Metropolitan Police.

Infant deaths in Redbridge are also among the lowest in east London, with only one death in the past five years, that of one-year-old Hylene Essilfie who was murdered in 2007.

Her father Francis was jailed in 2009 over her death.

Havering has had four infant deaths and Barking and Dagenham has had three.

Det Ch Supt Hamish Campbell, head of the Met Police’s Homicide and Serious Crime Command, said murder rates have been falling over the past few years.

He said: “The work of very many people in the police, communities and other organisations, and their efforts in preventing crime in the first place, has helped achieve this reduction.

“We want that to continue and the help of the public is essential in achieving both the arrests and convictions that follow.”
