A brave seven-year-old leukaemia survivor from Wanstead did his bit to raise funds for others with the disease by joining Sir Ian Botham on Saturday.

Oisin Coll and his family, who live in St Margaret’s Road, joined the cricket great on the final leg of his Great British Walk.

The Aldersbrook Primary school pupil; brother Dara, four; and mum and dad, Nicola and Peter, both 41, walked the last four miles with Botham from Kew to Richmond.

The former cricketer, who is president of Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research, has raised 300,000 for the charity through his 160-mile challenge which started on April 12.

Sir Steve Redgrave, Nick Faldo, Louie Spence and Tessa Sanderson were among the faces lending their support on Saturday.

Nicola said: “We had a great day out.

“The walk itself was fantastic and Oisin has loved being part of the whole thing.”

The family has raised 9,700 for the charity themselves ever since Oisin was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia in 2007.

He endured three years of treatment before making a full recovery.

On Friday, he talked to his classmates at his Harpenden Road school in an assembly and a no uniform day was organised which raised 600.

Nicola said: “His school has been fantastic.

“We’re amazed by the support we’ve had, it’s gone way beyond what we thought we could raise.”

The survival rate for childhood leukaemia has increased from 20 per cent to 90 per cent since 1985.
