Union Flags have been proudly waved at Diamond Jubilee street parties and events across Redbridge this bank holiday weekend, as residents came together to mark the royal milestone,

Traditional party games, bouncy castles and plenty of food have all helped make parties a huge success, even with many having to battle through Sunday’s rain.

The parties began on Saturday, with today seeing more than 30, more than any other day.

The final few parties will cap off a Diamond Jubilee weekend to remember tomorrow.

Music and laughter could be heard from several streets away as families left their Union Jack-decked homes to get to know their neighbours in Glencoe Avenue, Seven Kings on Sunday.

The incredible atmosphere and community spirit could not be ignored as the whole street came out to chat, eat and play a variety of traditional party games under the homemade bunting.

One of the organisers, Linda Redman, 50, of Glencoe Avenue said: “The whole day has been fantastic and everyone has been so generous.

“We have been playing getting to know you games for children and adults, and everyone has joined in, we have all been singing and dancing.”

The party was also raising money for St Francis Hospice in Broxhill Road, Havering-atte-Bower.

Meanwhile, Goodmayes Park was the venue for residents who came out in force to celebrate the Jubilee with a special picnic and a number of British-themed games on Sunday.

Chairman of Goodmayes Residents Association (GRASS), Keith Stanbury, said: “I am delighted with the turn out today and it makes all the organising involved worth while. It is marvellous people are leaving their homes in this weather to celebrate like this.

“I jut want to say a big thanks to everyone who made this possible and bringing the community together.”

All the food was provided by local businesses including The Grill Hut, in Goodmayes Road, Tesco and the Gurdwara, both in High Road, Goodmayes.

Adults, children of all ages and councillors were enjoying the wide variety of food on offer and everyone was determined to ignore the rain and have a good time in the park.

In Wanstead, shopkeepers and residents were out early covering every available surface with a Union Jack, while preparing the delicious, and very British, food so there was enough to go round.

Long tables draped with flags filled the High Street on Sunday with people donning patriotic hats while listening to the popular Redbridge Music Lounge band.

Organiser, Kerrie Dainty, 61, of High Street, Wanstead said: “People have been pitching in for the last few days getting the street and all the food ready. And despite the British weather it is great and we have all kept calm and carried on.”

Visitors were never going to go hungry with a large array of traditional desserts to tempt even the pickiest of customers as well as the nearby farmers market offering local produce.

Parents and children sat around listening to the popular music and despite the wet weather everyone seemed to be having a good time.
