Residents who are vulnerable to burglary because of alleyways next to their homes can apply for funding from Redbridge Council for gates.
Burglars can use alleyways to enter and leave homes unnoticed, so the council will provide half the costs towards projects to install gates to block their access. Applicants will need to get approval from all affected neighbours before applying.
A council spokesman said: “Funding is limited and priority will be given to the alleyways that are considered most vulnerable.”
The scheme is paid for out of 40,000 approved by the council’s cabinet in October, which will also be spent on forensic water-marking kits.
