More than £2million is set to be spent on replacing Redbridge lampposts that have stood for years longer than they were built for.
Around 3,500 columns that have been up for more than 25 years need to “urgently” be replaced over the next two years.
Some lights in north west Redbridge are believed to be almost 40 years old.
Lights are tested every year to make sure any that are not structurally sound are removed.
A cabinet report on the new scheme said: “The structural integrity of the columns is becoming a concern and a large scale replacement programme is now needed to ensure public safety.”
