The history of Wanstead Park will be revealed in a series of free walks starting on Sunday.

The Friends of Wanstead Parklands are leading them, taking in the surviving features of the once famous landscaped garden.

Royalty including Henry VIII and Queen Elizabeth I visited the manor house on the site before a grand mansion was built in the 18th century. Little is left from the former estate’s glory days after Wanstead House was demolished in 1825 to repay huge debts.

Each walk will focus on different aspects of the park’s history and ecology.

Donations to the Friends would be appreciated. The first walk starts at 11am from the Warren Road entrance.
