A 13-year-old who was so “frustrated” by her uncle’s death from cancer that she cut her hair off for charity, has won our monthly Young Citizen award.
Ionie Wheeler, of Primrose Road, South Woodford, was chosen by our panel as the April winner of the Recorder/Redbridge Rotary Club Young Citizen Award, and will receive £40 in vouchers to spend in the Exchange Ilford shopping centre.
The pupil at Woodbridge High School, St Barnabas Road, Woodford Green, lost her uncle Jonny, aged 45, to cancer in February.
Following his death, she researched what she could do to make a difference and decided to donate 11 inches of her hair to the Little Princess Trust.
The charity makes wigs for children with cancer.
She has received donations for the charity for her selfless act and is already up to more than £1,500.
