A cupcake sale organised by two Ilford teenagers has raised £300 to help people caught up in the Syrian conflict.
Khadijah Begum, 18, and Maryam Mahmood, 17, baked 200 cupcakes and set up a stall outside a butcher’s shop in Ilford Lane on Thursday.
They were inspired to raise money after seeing television reports on the conflict which, according to the charity Islamic Relief, has killed an estimated 100,000 people and created 1.5 million refugees.
“We did it because of what we have seen on television, we wanted to help them out,” said Khadijah who is on a gap year before attending a childcare course at Redbridge College.
Khadijah said the pair used Facebook and Twitter to advertise their stall and were pleased with the response.
“People came from far away to show their support,” Khadijah said.
The money will be donated to Islamic Relief’s Syria Appeal.
