Leading councillors were given a strong message from the borough’s young people at the first youth debate held at Redbridge Town Hall tonight.
The debate, chaired by Recorder editor Chris Carter, and featuring councillors Alan Weinberg (con), Ian Bond (libDem), Wes Streeting (lab) and Filly Maravala (Ind) heard questions including those on youth unemployment, community cohesion and safety for young people.
Cllr Weinberg told the audience that a good education would help people find a job. Cllr Bond stressed people had a head start because the students were from Redbridge and Cllr Streeting said it was one of the biggest issues facing young people. Cllr Maravala urged that the education grant be introduced.
The audience urged the councillors to engage in business to improve prospects for young people and also painted a bleak picture over crime on the streets of the borough.
More on the debate tomorrow.
