Generous children did their bit to help the homeless get through the winter months.
School pupils at Gordon Infant School in Golfe Road, Ilford, donated food and everyday essentials to the Waltham Forest YMCA Christian Kitchen.
The donations, a part of the school’s annual harvest assembly, included everything from sugar, rice and tinned meat, to soap, shampoo and instant noodles.
The Christian Kitchen feed between 40 and 70 homeless people a night in east London and rely completely on donations from the public.
Acting deputy headteacher Cath Partridge said: “It’s an annual thing at the school and we have a donated to a charity that’s a really worthy cause.”
The children came to school dressed in harvest-themed costumes with their parents to donate their share of the school’s contribution.
Cath added: “The feedback has been really good, the children and parents really enjoyed the day and they were happy to give something back to those who need the support.”
Children from year one, year two, reception and nursery donated and took part in singing and a drama performance to mark the occasion.
“We feel it’s very important to support those with less than we have and it’s great to be able to encourage them at such a young age - to make them aware that there are people that are less fortunate than themselves.”
