A Seven Kings schoolgirl has been nominated for an award after raising awareness of children's rights.

Anayah Rohshin-Saran, nine, contributed to a Rights Rule page in Seven Kings Primary's fortnightly newsletters in which she promoted the language of rights.

Anayah was a member of the school council and a rights champion last year.

She also invited author Onjali Rauf to speak to pupils about her understanding of rights and what inspired her to become an author.

Anayah has now been nominated for the Ilford Recorder/Redbridge Rotary Young Citizen Awards, which bid to recognise the outstanding achievements of young people in the borough aged 25 and under.

She said: "As a rights respecting school, the school council came up with an idea to raise the ethos of rights.

"The issue of children's rights is important to me because I don't think it is fair that we enjoy our rights in the UK and some children around the world do not have these rights."

Onjali founded Making Herstory, an organisation which aims to stop abuse against women and girls.

Her debut novel, The Boy at the Back of the Class, won a number of awards including the 2019 Waterstones children's book prize.

It tells the story of a refugee boy joining a school class, soon embarking upon an adventure with friends. The book is based in part on her experiences of working at refugee camps.

Anayah said she invited Onjali because "she is passionate about rights".

During the visit, the author also took questions from pupils.

Class teacher Shafe Malick was full of praise for Anayah, adding: "She is a bright and thoughtful child, who perseveres in all learning areas regardless of what subject is being learnt.

"She is a pleasure to teach and it is no surprise that she is being nominated for this award."

The overall winner of the award will receive £100 from Redbridge Rotary Club and will, along with the runner-up, go through to the national Young Citizen final run by Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland.
