Redbridge Council is hoping to "transform" Ilford and has bid for £20m of government funding to support its plans.

An authority spokesperson said it wants to use the potential of the Elizabeth Line, which launched earlier this year and runs through the borough.

The council's project, called The Ilford Gateway to Opportunity, plans to "transform" the entrance into the town from the west of Redbridge.

It will centre on improvements to the Ilford Gyratory (around Ilford Hill, Chapel Road and south of the main Ilford Station entrance) and delivery of the Ilford garden junction.

It aims to improve walking and cycling routes, as well as "create direct connections into Ilford town centre giving greater priority to public transport and active travel", the spokesperson added.

"All this would drive new footfall into Ilford town centre generating economic benefit for existing and new businesses, whilst accommodating growth."

The council has made a bid to the government's Levelling Up fund for the cash.

Cllr Jas Athwal, council leader, said: “Making our town centre walkable and inviting will boost our local economy and improve Ilford for visitors, workers and all our neighbours who live here.

“This project will tackle congested roads, make space for walking and cycling and open up links to our newly refurbished Elizabeth Line station.

"Our town centre is growing and we want to make sure that growth works for everyone."

He said this would also include new public space, trees and "the protection and enhancement of our historical treasures" such as the Ilford Hospital chapel.

Other benefits the council said the scheme would bring if approved include "substantial greening" with better connections to Roding Valley and Wanstead Flats, as well as improved bus links to the Elizabeth Line.

The council claims the plans are backed by businesses, MPs and neighbouring boroughs.

It expects the government to make a decision on its bid later in the year.
