When did you last check your mobile phone? For some the answer will be, “Halfway through reading that last sentence, Steve.” We’re phone addicts these days. I’d give out the number for the helpline but that would make things worse.

New data has come out that ranks the areas of London with the most phone thefts. I'm not sure what we are meant to do with this information. Are we meant to get on a train and go to Bexley to make a call because you're less likely to get mugged for it there?

The data tells us that journey would be fraught with phone danger. You'd get on the train and head through Redbridge, which is 12th place on the list where 4,538 mobile phones were stolen over the three-year period.

It gets worse. As your train stops at Stratford you're in Newham which was seventh on the list with 9,805 thefts. Why even bother putting up phone masts?

Before you feel bad about our level of telephony larceny get ready for the Tube bit of the journey. Circle Line from Liverpool Street to Monument so you can walk to London Bridge for the train to Bexley? Don't stay on by accident. The top of the phone theft league was Westminster with 33,330 phones being tea-leafed.

That's the home of parliament. No wonder they keep losing top secret documents if they can't even keep hold of their phones.

The problem is we're phone zombies who walk around holding our phones out. We're doing the pickpocketers work for them.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy seeing someone walk into a lamp-post as much as anyone but if these stats make us put our phones away and pay attention to the real world on front of us, rob away, rob away!
