People of all faiths and backgrounds paid their respects this morning, to remember those who sacrificed their lives during the First and Second World Wars.

Dignitaries, community leaders, councillors, MPs and members of the public both young and old gathered at Ilford War Memorial, Newbury Park, to provide a fitting tribute to the fallen.

The multi-faith dedication was opened by chaplain to the Royal British Legion (RBL) and reader at St Peter’s Church, Aldborough Hatch, Brian Kerrison.

He said: “We remember those of all faiths and backgrounds who have given their lives for their country and for us today living in peace and security here in Redbridge.”

Council leader Jas Athwal, Lib Dem leader Cllr Ian Bond and Cllr Paul Canal, leader of the Conservatives, united to lay wreaths at the foot of the unnamed soldier.

A touching moment saw children sprinkle poppies on the floor around the monument.

RBL Barkingside branch standard bearer, John Bowers, 69, said: “It was a fitting tribute to the names that are on the memorial wall.”

Samina Siddiqi of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Women’s Association said: “This was my second service. It brought a tear to my eye when we were saying the Lord’s Prayer.”

Cllr Athwal added: “I think the amount of people that have turned up today is one of the best.

“It has grown even more over the years. I’m really pleased that the people who gave their lives, those brave soldiers, are not forgotten.

“I’m looking forward to a bigger service next year.”
