Redbridge residents are rekindling an old flame this Valentine’s Day, with a romantic movie night set to take place at a historic former cinema.

Chadwell Heath South Residents’ Association are screening the academy award-winning film Titanic at Mayfair Venue, in High Road, Chadwell Heath, on February 10.

The venue originally opened in 1934 under the name of The Embassy Cinema, also known as “The Gaumont”.

Ushering in the spirit of the 1930s - jazz music, dancing, popcorn, candy floss and candlelit couples’ tables await guests at the semi-formal event.

A display commemorating the life of Ilford-born survivor of the Titanic Eva Hart willalso be on show in the foyer, created in collaboration with Valence House and Barking and Dagenham council.

Chadwell Heath South Residents’ Association’s Rama Muraleetharan said he hoped the success of the event would lead to further screenings.

“They’re in for a night to wind back the clock and take in the spectacle,” he said, adding: “It’s also not just for couples, single people are welcome too.”

A string quartet will welcome guests in the foyer with ragtime jazz and classical music.

During the film’s intermission, a buffet dinner will be served to the sounds of swing singer Steve Conway. After the movie, a DJ set will take place with dancing until midnight.

Rama added: “We’re looking to evoke nostalgia.

“We cannot wait to have guests attend to show them the beauty of this historic venue.

“To show it can once more be a place for film, theatre, music and dance.”

The former Embassy Cinema is believed to be one of the most lavish of the eight cinemas known to have been designed by architect Harry Weston.

In 1966, it closed and became a bingo hall.

In 2015, following the closure of the hall, it was transformed into a wedding hall/banqueting suite.

Chadwell Heath South Residents’ Association work to advance community development and urban regeneration, for the benefit of the public.

Doors for the event open at 5.15pm and the film begins at 6pm.

Tickets for the event start from £10 and can be purchased on the door or in advance at chs.ra@outlook.com or 07517 714 514
