Some of Redbridge’s hidden architectural gems will be fully opened for members of the public to admire free of charge this weekend.
As part of Open House London, a citywide campaign to promote awareness of the capital’s outstanding buildings, visitors will be able to enjoy unrestricted access to several of the borough’s most beloved structures.
Valentines Mansion, Bancroft’s School and The Temple at Wanstead Park are just a few of the buildings which will be opening their doors, with a heritage walk around Wanstead also available for free.
Cllr Jas Athwal, leader of Redbridge Council, said: “Open House is the best way to see, explore and learn about the borough’s rich architecture.
“This year we have a fantastic programme of open buildings and walks for residents to enjoy our historic, prestigious and beautiful buildings.
“It’s your chance to explore a bit of hidden Redbridge and discover some of its best buildings.”
Bancroft’s School, in High Road, Woodford Green, moved to Woodford in 1889 from its original home in Mile End Road.
It was founded following the bequest of the wealthy Francis Bancroft, a member of the Drapers’ Company who wished to educate “one hundred poor boys”.
Areas open to the public will include the Tower, chapel, great hall and surrounding grounds.
The Temple, in Wanstead Park, Warren Road, dates back to the 18th century and is one of the only surviving features of the old Wanstead House, demolished in 1824.
Other attractions members of the public can visit include Woodford County High School for Girls, in Woodford Green, which was formerly Highams Manor, and the Sukkat Shalom Reform Synagogue, in Wanstead.
For opening times for the initiative, taking place on Saturday and Sunday (September 20 and 21), visit redbridge.gov.uk/openhouse.
