An emotional Remembrance service was held in Wanstead as residents gathered at the town’s war memorial to mark the centenary of the end of the First World War.
At 12.30pm on Sunday, November 11, a service was held at the memorial in Wanstead High Street, including the laying of wreaths, a brief prayer and two minutes’ silence.
Wanstead Village councillor Paul Donovan told the Recorder: “It was a moving to attend the Remembrance ceremonies at both Wanstead and Snaresbrook memorials.
“There was an excellent turn out of people at both occasions, showing that people have not forgotten and do remember those who lost their lives in these terrible conflicts.
“The dignity and solemnity shown at both events was in the true spirit of remembrance, which is about honouring those who died and reliving the memory in order that such terrible loss does not recur again in the future.
“An occasion to remember, honour and reflect, not glorify such horrific loss of life.”
