On Sunday, November 11, a congregation gathered to pay respect to the brave men and women who have given their lives while serving their country.

Cllr Howard Berlin, who was elected in the May local elections to represent Fairlop ward, laid a wreath at the Hainault war memorial in Manford Way at 11am before later attending a second event at Fairlop Waters in the afternoon.

He told the Recorder: “It was a real honour to be asked to participate in what was a particularly poignant memorial to mark 100 years since the end of the First World War.

“It was really moving, particularly for me as I carried with me a ‘death penny’ which was given to my grandfather after his brother, my great-uncle, Henry Shatcofsky, whom I am named after, died in action in May 1918.”
Speaking about the borough’s Remembrance Day programme in general, Mayor of Redbridge Cllr Debbie Kaur-Thiara, said: “Every year, we fall silent for two minutes to remember service personnel who have died in wars and conflict.
“We are humbled at the sacrifices and owe them a debt of gratitude.”
