You might think it’s all lentils and soya milk, but there’s one vegan determined to challenge the hippy stereotype.
Anna Solaiman, of Cranbrook Rise, is in the final four of PETA’s Sexiest Vegan contest for 2015.
The 29-year-old, who is also a model, is hoping to redefine the hippy stereotype of veganism.
She told the Recorder: “It is a different way of showing veganism, it can be sexy and it can be glamorous.”
Anna entered the contest at the behest of her friends “as a bit of fun”, but now wants to use the platform to educate more people about her ethics and beliefs.
She said: “At the beginning of last year I became a vegetarian as a new year’s resolution and I thought that was OK to stop animals suffering.
“Then I looked at more videos about it, what happens to cows to produce veal and how many chicks get crushed when getting eggs, and I decided to become vegan.”
She also could not forget her pets, two rabbits and a cat, “who definitely played a part”.
According to Anna “it has never been easier to be a vegan”.
She explained: “I live in London and there are replacements for everything, even steaks and eggs, when you get the hang of cooking its fine.”
Vegan eggs? “You can get tofu scrambled eggs and they taste exactly the same.”
Anna is even more creative when it comes to replacing cheese.
“You can make your own, it is amazing, you just soak cashews in water. I make it quite regularly.”
Most vegetarians and vegans seem to miss bacon, however Anna has a more left field dream.
She said: “I do not know why but I really miss whipped cream, however recently I found they make tofu whipped cream so I have been eating that.”
Anna says she finds the vegan lifestyle rewarding in many different ways.
“For me since being a vegan I have become so much more energetic, I am full of beans, literally.”
The public have until July 17 to help Anna be crowned the sexiest vegan in the country. To vote visit http://www.peta.org.uk/living/uk-and-irelands-sexiest-vegan-competition-2015-vote-now/.
