An Ilford singer who has supported acts including Ed Sheeran and Bastille will be launching her first album on Friday.
Kal Lavelle, who lives near Valentines Park, told the Recorder that she is both excited and nervous for people to hear her new album ‘For the Loved and Lost.’
The album has been more than four years in the making and on Friday (June 1) at St Giles in the Fields Church in central London her fans will get to hear it for the first time.
The singer and promoter - originally from Ireland - has already received the seal of approval from the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, as the event will be part of his #SoundsLikeLondon initiative where he is hoping to ‘shine a light on emerging female talent in the music industry’.
The Mayor announced earlier this month that his summer programme will feature more than 200 gigs across the capital, with events taking place every day throughout June.
The initiative is part of a package of measures from the Mayor to help support and protect the capital’s grassroots music scene.
It will also shine a light on women working in the music industry and is part of the Mayor’s #BehindEveryGreatCity campaign, which celebrates the role of women in the capital.
Both singles, Blue Lagoon and Get Out of My Head from Kal’s forthcoming album have made the top three in the iTunes Singer Songwriter chart, with Blue Lagoon hitting number one in Ireland and number two in the UK.
Her track Blue Lagoon also features on the Next Big Thing show on all British Airways flights.
Her first album began all the way back at the end of 2013 when she ran a crowd funding campaign to raise money to record her music, and she managed to raise over half the money she needed in the first 24 hours and reached her total after just 23 days.
Highlights for the Irish star include supporting one of the world’s best selling artists Ed Sheeran on his tour in 2011, and playing to 10,000 people at his show in Thetford Forest, Suffolk and in 2015 The British Library requesting to place her music in the British Library’s Sound Archive.
Kal will be supported at her album launch show by Fiona Bevan - who had a number one in 10 countries with ‘Little Things’ which she co-wrote with Ed Sheeran.
Fiona’s song ‘Slo Mo Tiger Glo’ features on a HSBC advert in the UK and will soon be the theme music for a BBC drama.
Speaking about her album launch Kal said: “I’m excited and nervous.
“Everyone has put so much time and effort into this one big event and you just hope that it goes well.”
