Andy, who grew up in Hornchurch, is the Saturday headliner at the festival at Damyns Hall Aerodrome, Aveley Road, Upminster, in May along with Carl Cox, Gorgon City, Sigma and Sub Focus.

He told the Recorder: “I can’t wait for [We Are FSTVL], it’s my local area and all my family and friends will be coming down for it.

“I discovered my inspiration to do drum ‘n’ bass in that area.

“It’s a great local festival for us, especially for the people in the area – it’s a fantastic opportunity to see some amazing, international acts.”

This is the sixth edition of the dance music festival, which takes place over the bank holiday weekend, between May 25 and 27.

Andy has worked with many world-renowned artists, such as Rihanna and Sub Focus.

His pioneering label Ram Records has sold hundreds of thousands of records and produced crossover stars like Chase & Status.

The DJ spoke about what it was like to work with Chase & Status before they were so well-known.

He said: “It’s been fantastic to see their journey. In fact we have all come along on this journey together.

“That’s what music is all about, my vibe is open to working with everybody.”

From the streets of Hornchurch to performing in countries all over the world, Andy said: “It’s been an amazing journey.”

He added: “I started off doing a couple shows in London and now I’m travelling all over the UK and Europe.

“Before I play at the We Are FSTVL, I’ll be going to LA in America, Tenerife, Dubai, New Zealand, Australia and then back to Upminster for the show.”

Speaking about which country Andy has enjoyed performing in the most, he found it difficult to choose.

“I love Australia and America. Japan is fantastic, I just love the culture and the people are so respectful,” Andy said.

“The Czech Republic is fantastic, and Belgium too. Pretty much every country has it’s own unique vibe.

“I feel really lucky, when I reel off all the places I will be travelling to, I think how on earth did that happen?”

Andy didn’t always know that he was going to be a drum ‘n’ bass artist, but he has been interested in music from a very young age.

“My dad brought me a drum kit when I was five, so maybe they thought I was going to become a drummer,” he said.

“My older sister was going to raves pretty much all time, and so music became a dominant part of the household.

“Eventually, I just gravitated towards [drum ‘n’ bass] music.”

Andy describes music as an underground genre.

“No one used to know how to explain to people what drum ‘n’ bass music was,” he said.

“It’s underground, but every now and then it makes it to the mainstream.

“Fundamentally it’s an underground form of music that is ingrained in dance.”

Andy gets inspiration for his music from his everyday life.

He said: “Because I have been involved in the music business for such a long time, I am able to draw from my experiences, feelings and emotions that I may have had a certain parties or moments in my life.

“Whether it’s hanging out with my mates or listening to a new song that we have never heard before, I draw on these experiences and just try to have a good time.

“In particular, I always love the start of summer and at festivals when you see the tents going up and you can hear the crowd roar – I love that vibe.

“I just want to have a good time and dance.”

Andy C will be joined by grime artists Mostack, Kojo Funds, Yungen, Yxng Bane and Lethal Bizzle.
