The five Old Spices performed at the Olympic stadium – singing hits including I’ll Tell What You Want and Spice Up Your Life.

They emerged atop black taxis decorated with bright lights.

Reacting afterwards to the show, fashion designer Victoria Beckham opted to emphasise to her Twitter followers that she is no longer a pop performer.

“I was a pop star for the night!! I love u @MelanieCmusic, @OfficialMelB, @GeriHalliwell, @EmmaBunton!! we did it!! (sic),” wrote Mrs Beckham.

Fellow Spice Girl Mel C took time out from her role as a prostitute in Superstar.

She wrote on Twitter: “What an honour to represent our country and perform for all of the incredible Olympians. We salute you one and all #coloursoftheworld x x (sic)”
