Ray Davies’ acclaimed musical has made it into a new season of “people’s choice” performances at Theatre Royal Stratford East.

The Royal will host three concert versions of some of their previously staged top musicals from the past decade as chosen by their supporters.

The votes from 3,000 people were for Big Life to be performed on April 27 and 28, Davies’ Come Dancing on June 1 and 2 and The Harder They Come on June 29 and 30.

Come Dancing written by the Kinks frontman took audiences back to the Ilford Palais in the 1950s for the story of a young girl’s short, brilliant, beautiful life and the 12 months in which it was turned upside down.

The Big Life transferred to the West End and was hailed as the first black British musical in theatreland.

Both funny and sad, it was a toe-tapping, tear-jerker which took audiences back in time when Caribbean migrants came to London looking to carve out a better life.

The Harder They Come went on to tour the UK. It told the tale of country-boy Ivan, who travels to Kingston, with his head full of songs and dreams of fame and fortune.
