The Lazarus Theatre Company are hoping to continue their success with the challenging show, following on from The Women of Troy last year.

It may be 2,500 years old, but Ricky Dukes will direct the first London production of Oedipus in more than four years and is hoping to bring something new to the story.

Edward Clements, 20, of Clarence Gate, Repton Park, plays the role of the Shepherd’s Son, in a city where the very core of society will never be the same again.

He said: “I found out I had the role at the end of January, fresh out of drama school. My character is a challenging one, especially as I am playing someone much older and have had to develop completely different mannerisms.

“I studied the play at school but many expect to come along and be crying for two hours.”

Sophocles’ masterpiece will be the first of the playwright’s works to be presented by the company in their signature style of movement and music.

It is hoped the production will help bring the classic work to a wider audience.

The former Forest School, College Place, Snaresbrook, student added: “We hope to bring a different dimension to the tough story and it has been enjoyable to be part of the classic tale.”

The play begins with Oedipus standing firm, strong and triumphant with his army basking in victory.

However after hearing of a prophesy that could ruin all he has built, the king acts to avert this which has huge repercussions.

At the Blue Elephant Theatre, Bethwin Rd, Camberwell, from now until March 23. To book please call 020 7701 0100. Tickets are £15.
