His book might be based on a far flung adventure but one author has ambitions that he hopes are not the stuff of fantasy.

Newham Council youth worker Demitri Kondogeorgis, has pledged to split 70 per cent of the profits of his first novel, Gorillas in a City, between three charities.

But there is one catch - he wants help to sell one million copies of the book.

This would mean £360,000 would go to domestic violence charity Aanchal Women’s Aid, and the Arkana Alliance, an Amazon rainforest foundation.

A decision on the lucky third charity will be left up to readers.

Demitri said: “I set the bar high because I think that the higher the bar the more money the charities will receive.

“I’m already getting such good feedback and responses ao I think that I could sell a million copies with the right people involved.

“It’s available on Amazon and in Waterstones London branches.”

The charity pledge currently applies to books sold through Author House, a self-publishing service. This is because it gives Demetri - and the charities - a greater share of the profits.

Demitri added that he is willing to scale down his ambitions to 500,000 copies if it looks as though he will not meet his target.

The book itself is about a young man, Reion Kane, who embodies a universal life force energy. Shortly after this, he experiences a chain of events which takes him on a ‘rollercoaster ride.’

Demetri, who lives in Romford, added: “I didn’t do so well at school so it was always a goal for me to write a book. It has taken me about five years.

“I have travelled all over the world and I have seen people struggle and live off basic means.

“People who buy the book will be helping to end this.”
