FA County Youth Cup: Essex 5 Oxfordshire 1
Essex eased into the next round of the FA County Youth Cup as a brace from Barking Abbey College’s Abasie Walker and goals by Liam Nash, Jordan Clark and Charlie Little sealed a comfortable victory at Hornchurch’s Bridge Avenue base.
Walker’s double gave Essex a deserved half-time lead in a game they dominated as they booked a trip to Sussex on November 9.
The 2012 winners never looked back after Clark and Walker went close to breaking the deadlock before the latter gave Essex the lead on 12 minutes.
Walker created space for himself before firing into the top corner from 12 yards but Oxfordshire goalkeeper Alex Grantham made a fine stop to keep out Nash’s low shot before the hosts doubled their lead on 32 minutes.
Danny Joyce’s right-wing run and neat cross found Walker at the far post and he stabbed home for his and Essex’s second.
Clark’s low drive flew just wide before the visitors threatened for the first time, with Salman Mohammed forcing a fine stop from Luke Avenell.
The home side were denied an early second half breakthrough as Grantham bravely dived at the feet of Clark but, with 56 minutes played, it was 3-0 courtesy of Nash’s cool lob.
A spirited Oxford side pulled a goal back on the hour, when the ball fell kindly for Anthony Martin to smash in from eight yards.
But Essex’s three-goal lead was restored within three minutes as Clark’s fine lob dropped inside the far post.
Oxfordshire’s substitute ‘keeper Charlie Pay made a fine block to keep out Clark, who had been played in on goal, before a good Essex move saw Declan Rydings slide a through ball to Shenfield High School’s Yeshaya Lomotey who fired just wide.
With just two minutes remaining, Essex completed their tally as Clark teed up substitute Little and his deflected shot found the bottom corner.
