Now Hainault duo set sights on 100-mile time trial
Hainault Roads Club’s evening 10-mile cycling time trial between Abridge and Ongar saw a fine win for Howard Staunton.
Staunton, from Newbury Park, completed the course in a time of 23 minutes and 17 seconds.
He had been pushed hard by Rob Dulson all the way to the turn at Ongar, before Dulson broke a spoke and had to retire.
Second place was snapped up by Matt Smith with 28.38 for his best placing so far in the series with John Witchell in third.
At the Essex Roads 10-mile event Mark Steers represented the club and despite recovering from illness he recorded a fine 25.05.
This event was a counting event for the SE Sporting Courses competition which is being targeted again this year by Steers.
He will be hoping to challenge towards the top of the field and will be looking to go one better than last two years, which has seen him finish second.
This weekend Staunton and Dulson will take their place in the season-defining Eastern Counties Cycling Association 100-mile time trial. Both have been getting in the practice with Dulson covering 100 training miles for the third consecutive Sunday in preparation.
