West Ham midfielder Jack Collison surprised many supporters on Saturday when he was declared fit to start in Saturday's play-off final.

The 23-year-old Wales international dislocated his shoulder in the semi-final with Cardiff City, but he was back to make his first appearance at Wembley.

"The first thing that went through my mind when I did it was that I was going to miss the final," said Collison.

"I have to say well done to the medical team. They have been brilliant with my knee, but this week they have just shown what they were all about."

Scans showed that the injury was not as bad as first thought, but Collison revealed that it was still touch and go.

"I think there was a bit of worry to begin with, but as soon as I knew I couldn't do any more damage I was always going to have a go," he revealed.

"Luckily the manager kept faith in me and the medical team have been working me round the clock."

The hero of the semi-final first leg when he scored the two goals that beat Cardiff City, was not at his best on Saturday, though he did release Kevin Nolan for what proved to be the winner.

But he was just happy to be a part of an amazing occasion at Wembley.

"What a fabulous day," he said. "The fans were magnificent."

"We didn't play our greatest game, but the result matters at the end of the day and we are going up."
