Winger insists: ‘You will see the best of him now’

Winger Lee Cook believes that Orient fans will now see the best of striker David Mooney after he netted three goals in the last week.

The 28-year-old Dubliner has been under fire from a section of the Orient fans recently, but Mooney responded by scoring his first goal of the season against Gloucester City last Wednesday in the FA Cup and then bagged two more at the weekend in the 4-1 win at Carlisle United – where only the crossbar robbed him of a hat-trick.

Since his return to the side, Mooney had been working hard, but missed several chances to open his goal account.

But former QPR man Cook believes that there will be no stopping Mooney now he is up and running.

“The thing with ‘Moons’ (Mooney) is he is a confidence player,” said Cook. “He is one of those players you need to put your arm around.

“When he came back into the side against Coventry he had a decent game and that gave him a boost.

“You will see the best of him now because he is a talented boy and if we can keep him in that sort of form we will do well.

“Hopefully we can keep him and ‘Lis’ (Kevin Lisbie) fit because with them two up there they can help the team and score goals themselves.”

After Tuesday night’s 3-2 win at Portsmouth, Orient have recorded three league wins on the trot and Cook is convinced the team can continue their climb up the table.

“I don’t think this year that there are three or four teams that are miles better than anyone else,” said Cook. “I think you can do anything you want to do (this season). The world is your lobster in this division,” he smiled.

“I think we can be in a good position come Christmas. We have got a lot of games and if we could keep this form going and keep going we could be pushing into the play-offs at Christmas.

“So that’s where I want to be. I want to be at the top end of this division and pushing into the Championship.”
