Barkingside take on landlords Ilford in friendly

Barkingside and Ilford go head-to-head for the first-ever Cricklefield Cup tonight (Wednesday).

Tenants take on landlords in the pre-season friendly after Ryman One North Barkingside moved to Cricklefield Stadium from Oakside having reached a groundshare agreement with the Foxes for a period of up to 17 years.

And the two clubs are hoping to meet in a friendly fixture which is set to become an annual event.

Barkingside manager Matt Frew said: “When their manager, Allan Fenn, was announced, he came up with the idea to call it the ‘Cricklefield Cup’.

“I am not sure if there is an actual cup or not, but it should be played every year from now on and I am looking forward to it.”

When Barkingside moved to Cricklefield following the conclusion of the 2013/14 season, Frew was adamant he would build a positive relationship with Ilford.

That certainly appears the case with associates from both clubs ensuring the stadium is perfectly ready for the new campaign.

The Side boss is expecting a good match this evening, but isn’t too fussed about the result – more the fitness workout for his team.

Frew added: “When we moved to Cricklefield I said I wanted to build a good relationship with Ilford and that is what I have done.

“We help them when we can and they will help us, and this fixture will be good.

“I want to win, but the fitness is the main issue. The result is not an issue. If we get beat, we get beat. If we win, we win.

“I just want the boys to go out there and work as hard as you can and make sure you get the fitness in for August 9.”
