Redbridge boss Ross in realistic mood

Pre-season goes well for Motormen

Redbridge enjoyed six wins in seven pre-season games, but joint boss Dave Ross knows it will all be in vain if they slip up in the opening fixture of the new Ryman One North season.

Motormen host Harlow on Saturday, but constrained by a tight budget that is likely to limit his squad to just 16 players this season, Ross feels a repeat of last term’s 14th place finish will represent a considerable achievement.

Victory over an experimental Hornchurch side in midweek provided a boost to Redbridge, who have taken on trialists over the summer in search of cover for injured strikers Brian Moses and Shane Wallace, who could be sidelined for up to six weeks.

“There are a lot of teams this year who are going to go with reduced squads and we’re going to be the same,” said Ross.

“We’re looking to go forward with a squad of probably 16 players.

“If the squad we’ve got at the moment can compete and do well then we won’t be on the look-out, but if we’re struggling in certain areas we’ll have to put ourselves out to new players. We’re always open to improvement.”

And despite the club’s pre-season run of form, Ross remains pragmatic over the task facing Motormen this season.

“We’re hoping to improve and know it’s going to be hard season. We’re one of the teams with one of the lowest budgets in the league, so it’s going to be difficult for us.

“We’re hoping to do as best as we can, but I’m not going to put any predictions on it. I’m not looking at where we’re going to finish in the league, I’m looking at Harlow on Saturday.

“Let’s see how we can compete against Harlow, who are on of the favourites for the league.”

Redbridge face a trip to Heybridge, third last year, on Tuesday and then visit Dereham, who ended up in seventh.

“It’s going to be a difficult start against Harlow, Heybridge and Dereham, but we’ll go out there and the boys will do the best they can and hopefully we can get something out of all three games.”
