Redbridge joint manager Ricky Eaton was left to rue the cost of two “cheap” goals as his side lost 3-2 to Chatham Town in the FA Trophy at Oakside on Saturday
The home side went into half time level but Chatham dominated proceedings after the break and deservedly went two goals ahead through Lee Hales and Austin Gacheru and it was the loss of momentum which irked Eaton most.
“We let them get away with some cheap goals and before we knew it we were two goals down,” said the Redbridge boss.
“We pulled a goal back with the penalty but we switched off a minute after.”
The Motormen’s first goal came from the penalty spot in the 76th minute and Eaton believes, the referee was right not to send off Chatham goalkeeper Jack Bradshaw for his foul on Patrick Damali.
Eaton said: “I don’t think the penalty warranted a red card for the keeper.
“I thought our player was going away from goal and it was borderline whether it was inside or outside the box.
“I think it would have been harsh if he had been sent off.”
Just a minute after getting a foothold in the match with the penalty, Redbridge conceded a soft goal after a defensive mix up between Liam Thomas and Tyron Thomas which allowed substitute James Alderman to score.
Eaton said: “Our centre backs got really tight, competed for the same ball and our full back let his man get a free bit of space and he attacked it and got the goal.
“It was just disappointing that it was minute after getting back into the game so the third goal really killed us.”
With exits from the FA Cup and now the FA Trophy, Eaton hopes the cup defeats won’t affect the team in the league when they travel to Cheshunt on Saturday, before making the trip to Cockfosters in the London Senior Cup on Tuesday.
“Our priority has always been the league, but the cups are just a bonus to us,” added Eaton.
“The defeat doesn’t mean we were unprepared for the game, because we did prepare well for the game, it is just unfortunate that we got knocked out in the first round of both of them.
“We were on a decent run in the league before the Trophy game so hopefully we can get back to winning ways as soon as possible.
