Barkingside put up a brave display against Maldon & Tiptree last weekend, but it failed to prevent them from losing 4-2 at Oakside.
It was another Ryman One North defeat, but manager Matt Frew was taking the positives.
“Most looked at it before and probably thought it would be a cricket score,” said the boss.
“Don’t get me wrong, I’m disappointed with the result, but the performance was up there with the Heybridge one. We’ve given a good account of ourselves and that is what I have asked from the boys the past few weeks. They’ve given a good Maldon team a game.”
A double from Matt Gulfer, one a deflected free kick and the other, following up his own penalty, ensured it was 2-2 at the break and the Side boss admitted he was aiming for a win at that point.
Maldon grabbed a third and then with Barkingside pushing for an equaliser, added a fourth late on but belief is still high.
Frew added: “Terry Spillane (Maldon manager) said to me in the bar afterwards ‘you’ve got a half decent side, you won’t get relegated’.
“It’s nice hearing things like that, it doesn’t change a thing, but it adds to the belief.
“There’s a lot of positives to take from this and it is a massive game at weekend.”
As Frew alluded to, Saturday’s match at Waltham Forest is huge. The hosts are bottom, but have made changes in recent weeks.
The Barkingside manager believes it is the most important match of their season so far. “They are coming off the back of a great result at Aveley where they won 2-1 and I’ve been told they’ve got a completely new side now,” explained the Barkingside manager.
“It is the biggest game of the season and it is a game we’ve got to get points from.
“I’m going there to get three points, of course it is going to be hard and it will be a good battle.
“But if we can match the performance against Maldon or even take it up another gear, we’ll be able to get something.”
