Redbridge needed an own goal to edge past relegation-threatened Erith at Oakside last night.

And their win would have delighted tenants Barkingside, who are also trying to beat the drop from Ryman One North.

Motormen were playing their third game in six days, having beaten Dereham at the weekend before losing to Maldon two nights earlier.

Erith had lost 3-0 to Barkingside in a six-pointer on Monday but made a bright start, with Tyler Christian-Law looking to find a way through.

Ben Bradbury found Daniel Francis midway through the first half, but his shot was straight at Bobby Sturgeon.

Motormen had penalty appeals waved away by referee Elliott Kaye when Abs Thompson went down in the box, before Erith wasted the best chance of the half as Reis Boyle blasted over from a corner.

The visitors thought they had broken the deadlock just before half time, but a free kick was awarded for a foul on Redbridge keeper Dean Driscoll as the scoreline remained blank.

The only goal arrived on the hour when Bradbury whipped in a fine cross in search of Francis and Boyle headed past Sturgeon and into his own net.

Patrick Damali went close to doubling the home side’s advantage when his thunderous effort came crashing off a post, while Bradbury saw a low shot saved by Sturgeon.

Both sides made changes in a bid to improve matters, but chances were at a premium as the game petered out.

Redbridge moved up to 14th in the table as a result and play host to Brentwood tomorrow.

Barkingside remain three points above the relegation zone after Ware’s 2-1 defeat at Brentwood, but the Hertfordshire club have five matches in hand on Matt Frew’s men, who visit leaders VCD Athletic tomorrow.

Redbridge: Driscoll, Bansende, D Smith, T Thomas, Good, Henty, Thompson, Carlile, Francis, Damali, Bradbury. Subs: Matthews, L Thompson, Aiken, Adekelan, L Thomas.

Erith: Sturgeon, Dolan, McIntyre, Sprinngett, Boyle, Matthews, Savage, Fitzpatrick, Thomas, Christian-Law, Rozan. Subs: Senkatuka, Lott, Whelan, Conteh, Clarke.
