Matt Frew has confirmed he will still be in charge of Barkingside next season after turning down a ‘great offers’ to manage elsewhere.
Frew enjoyed a wonderful final few months at the helm of the former Oakside club, who will play at Ilford’s Cricklefield ground from next season, as he helped them secure their Ryman One North survival.
And it seems that achievement hadn’t gone unnoticed with an offer put to Frew for his services.
But having weighed up his options, he felt he couldn’t walk away from Barkingside having achieved what he has over the final few months this season.
“It’s only in the last week that I’ve committed myself to the club,” said Frew.
“There has been offers, and a great offer at that, to go somewhere else. But I have had a lot of health issues and a lot of stress earlier in the season as well.
“But with what we have achieved here in the last few months there is no way I could turn my back on what we have at this club.”
Side did lose out 4-1 in their final game of the season at home to Sudbury, which was also the last time they would call Oakside their home.
Frew was disappointed with his side’s showing on the day, but having secured safety, he couldn’t be too downbeat.
“It was a bit of a bad day at the office really,” he added.
“We were poor in the first half. In the second half we did up it a little and could have scored a few. I can’t be too disappointed though.
“For these last 14 games we have played really well and got the job done really.
“It was frustrating not to end our spell at Oakside with a win but at least we scored the last goal on the day (via Chris Taylor), and we can go to Ilford now and start afresh there.”
The club’s presentation evening is on Saturday, and after that Frew plans to take a nice relaxing break from what he admits has been a tough baptism of fire in the Ryman League.
And while this season hasn’t completely been put to bed yet, he admits a few of his players are receiving offers – most notably Steve Carvell.
“A few of the players are bound to get offers because of the way they have played,” remarked Frew.
“I know Steve Carvell has had an offer. A manager contacted me on Twitter of all things to ask about speaking to him.
“I made Steve aware and he has spoken to him, but he’s happy to stay with us which is nice. It could all change though throughout the summer, but I’d like to keep as much of this sidetogether as possible.”
