Barkingside boss Matt Frew thinks another eight points should be enough to secure his team’s Ryman One North status.

Side snatched an injury time equaliser against Chatham Town on Monday night to edge four points clear of the drop zone, although third bottom Ware have four games in hand.

A productive March has seen Frew’s men lose two of eight games and he is delighted with the spirit they have shown.

“I think eight points should be enough but we’ll be trying to get as many as possible to make sure we’re safe,” he said.

“There’s more pressure on every game, especially at this stage of the season. We’ve got seven cup finals left.

“You could see from the celebrations after Chatham how much it meant to the players.”

The Oakside outfit face two tough fixtures this week against teams with outside chances of a play-off spot – Soham Town Rangers on Saturday and in-form local rivals Romford on Monday.

Frew says his squad is coming into its own as they cope with the fixture backlog.

“Both the games will be tough but we’re in good form so I’m sure they’ll respect us,” he added.

“It is hard for the players playing Saturday then Monday. But we’ve got a big squad and we’ve got some players coming back. Andy Edmunds and Danny Hayes should be available soon.”

Joe Ellul scored deep into stoppage time to rescue a 2-2 draw for 10 man Side against Chatham.

Richard Oxby was given his marching orders for an off the ball incident just after the half hour mark, by which time Matt Solly had given the Kent side the lead.

But it seemed to galvanise Barkingisde. Calvin Poku equalised only for Keiron McCann to give the visitors the lead again before Ellul’s decisive intervention.

Frew was chuffed with his team’s performance but less so with some of the antics of the opposition.

He said: “Their bench was constantly calling for bookings, waving the imaginary card. It annoyed me and we lost our discipline a bit.

“I thought we were there to play football.

“I knew it was going to be tough. Before the sending off they were better but it seemed to inspire us.”

Side beat Tilbury 3-0 on Saturday, goals from the in-form Poku, Matt Gulfer and Steve Carvell clinching another three points for Frew’s men.
