Barkingside boss reflects on friendly thrashing

Barkingside boss Matt Frew was delighted to see his men defeat Eastern Counties League Division One side Halstead Town 8-0 in their first match at new ground Cricklefield Stadium on Saturday.

Frew was more than happy with the workout and condition of Side’s new home pitch after watching the thrashing.

Steve Carvell helped himself to a first-half hat-trick, including a sumptuous lob from 35 yards for his third, while Dan Jones and Calvin Poku also found the net in the opening 45 minutes.

Side weren’t satisfied with just five, though, and added more goals in the second half through John Bricknell and Stefano, who bagged a brace.

Frew said: “The goals have been coming thick and fast. I would’ve liked to have played higher opposition but you can only play and beat what is put in front of you and we have done that.

“Halstead stepped in last minute and their manager (Mark Benterman) said to me it was a mix of trialists, youth team players and a couple first teamers, but I told the boys to just go out there and treat it like a normal match.

“It is all about match fitness and preparation levels and I can’t really fault the boys through pre-season. The squad is looking strong and the boys are young and looking hungry.”

Conference South outfit Boreham Wood pulled out of their scheduled friendly at the last minute, having arranged a match with Reading on Friday night.

And Frew was not impressed, adding: “We had made programmes for it and everything and considering they are a big club you expect better.

“I know they were given the opportunity to play Reading but we had arranged this friendly in May so I did expect better.”

Fortunately Side were able to arrange other opposition so they could play their first match at Cricklefield’s.

And Frew was pleased with the surface and the stadium, adding: “We played at our home ground for the first time and I was amazed by the work that has been put in over the summer by us and Ilford.

“We have been doing so much work on all parts of the ground to make it a lot better and it doesn’t just look a little tidier, everything is getting better.

“Saturday was a hot day. It was bumpy and dry, but the pitch wasn’t too bad. It didn’t stop us playing football.”

Barkingside are due to take on landlords Ilford on Wednesday.
