Frew eyeing a happy end to Barkingside’s Oakside stay

Barkingside boss Matt Frew is hoping that his side can replicate their 6-0 win over Erith & Belvedere when they face AFC Sudbury on Saturday.

Frew’s side were in scintillating form on Bank Holiday Monday with star player Calvin Poku scoring four goals inside 17 minutes before eventually adding a fifth.

And Frew is hoping that his side can go out with yet another win when they play their last game of the season at Oakside, before their move to groundshare with Essex Senior League neighbours Ilford.

“I’ve never seen a side come out playing so well as a player or a manager. The boys just came out of the traps and every attempt seemed to go in for the first 20 minutes,” said Frew.

“I told the boys I wanted the team to go out with a bang and to their credit they’ve done that.

“The way we’re playing I am hopeful that we can do that again on Saturday against Sudbury. It won’t be easy as they’re a good team, but we want to leave Oakside on a high.”

Frew’s men took the lead at Park View Road via Poku just seven minutes into the game and he then doubled that lead two minutes later.

Poku completed his five-minute hat-trick on 12 minutes and then made it four goals for his collection in the 17th.

The striker added a fifth before being replaced by young Harry Matthews, and Lewis Francis completed the scoring.

The Side boss may have been over the moon with the emphatic victory, but there was to be no repeats of last weeks Jose Mourinho-esque celebrations.

Frew sprinted down the touch-line and ended up at the bottom of a 20-man pile following their late victory over Waltham Forest last week.

“I wish I was a little more disciplined last week if I am honest,” he added. “We may have scored six goals, but I stayed well inside my technical area.”

With six goals scored it was no surprise to see Poku grabbing the headlines, but Frew was quick to praise goalkeeper Tim Pitman’s efforts.

The reserve keeper was given the nod ahead of Chris Clark and earned himself his first clean sheet of the season, and only Barkingside’s third away clean sheet of the campaign.

“I’ve given Tim the nod and he’s done well – I’m really pleased he has got himself a clean sheet,” said Frew.

Francis was again in the goals on Saturday as they drew 1-1 with Ware at Oakside, and any late relegation fears were put to bed with Wroxham, who are in the final relegation spot, after losing 2-1 at home to Burnham Ramblers.
