Boss blasts players for being too complacent
Barkingside manager Matt Frew was pleased with his side’s 2-1 win over Ilford in the ‘Cricklefield Trophy’ last night, but was not too pleased with the performance.
“Don’t get me wrong,” said Frew, “a win is a win, but I was not best pleased with my boys’ last night. I think this was probably our worst performance of pre-season.
“Take nothing away from Ilford, though, they had a brand new side out there and their players were obviously trying to impress their new manager.”
Goals from Joe Ellul and Lewis Francis gave the Cricklefield ‘new boys’ victory over their landlords, but it could have been much better, thought the boss. So did Side get the bragging rights with the win?
“I guess so,” he said, “but we get on well with everyone at Ilford and have very good working relationship. Alan Fenn is building a new side and I thought his boys wanted it more than us.
“The result is never an issue in pre-season games, but I didn’t think we got out of the traps last night.
“The players were a bit too complacent, they thought it would be a walk in the park,” he added.
“One positive to come out of the game, though, was the number of chances we created. We just need to put them away.”
Side travel at Takeley on Saturday, before ending pre-season with a home match against Grays Athletic on Monday night at Cricklefield.
Frew says places are still up for grabs though. “It’s up to the players to show me they deserve a place in the starting line-up when we kick-off on August 9,” he said.
