Boss happy with pre-season success
Barkingside rounded off their pre-season campaign in style with an emphatic 4-1 win over Ryman Premier Division side Grays Athletic last night.
New signing Dion Polious levelled after Grays opened the scoring, before last season’s top-scorer Calvin Poku put ‘Side ahead.
Goals from Joe Ellul and Lewis Francis made it four before the break as Matt Frew’s team ended up winning six of their seven pre-season fixtures, scoring 39 goals in the process.
But despite the scalp of comfortably seeing off a team from the division above, Frew is remaining realistic ahead of the season’s kick-off on Saturday against Thamesmead.
“The players knew it was going to be their biggest test and we did everything right,” he said. “The team played how I wanted them to play and we stopped them from playing too.
“They should be sharper than us, they should be fitter than us and they should be better than us, but my boys found their feet and we did everything right. It was a great performance in the end.”
He added: “Pre-season friendlies are pre-season friendlies and I don’t like to get carried away with them too much, but you’ve got to beat whatever’s put in front of you and my lot have gone out there and played a Ryman Prem side at full strength and we’ve caused problems.
“The fitness levels were there and I’m happy that we look like we’re ready. If we can take that kind of form into next Saturday then who knows.”
The team performance delighted Frew, who reserved particular praise for new signing Polious, after he made an instant impact at the club over the summer.
“He [Polious] is Calvin’s best mate. He’s very quick and been in and out of football for a little while, but he’s come over and been a breath of fresh air,” he added.
“He’s dangerous and got bags of pace, but what I like about him is comfortable on the ball and got a lovely left foot. He can put it in a lovely cross and he scores goals as well, he’s popped up I think with four this pre-season. It’s going in the right direction.”
Barkingside kick-off their Ryman North campaign with a trip to Thamesmead Town on Saturday at 3pm.
