Barkingside’s Frew delighted but puzzled over his late starters

We need to get out of the blocks quicker says the boss

Barkingside boss Matt Frew was delighted with his side’s four-point haul over the Bank Holiday weekend, but is still puzzled by their inability to get out of the starting blocks.

“I had the same last season, I remember talking to the Recorder about it then,” he said.

“We didn’t play at all well in the first half at Cricklefield against Cheshunt on Saturday. They worked so much harder than us and we were 2-0 down after 22 minutes,” said the manager.

Frew’s half-time team-talk seemed to do the trick though, “I sometimes think they like a half-time rollicking, but at least it had the desired effect,” he said.

“We came out, worked hard and looked a different team, and to be fair, but for their keeper we might have got more that the three goals.”

Goals from Daniel Callaway (56) and a brace from Steven Carvell (59 and 71) turned the match Barkingside’s way.

The boss had a warning though: “If we continue to play like we did in the first half, teams will punish us,” he said.

On the back of that win, Frew took his side to Heybridge Swifts on Bank Holiday Monday, and once again they were slow out of the traps.

“I don’t know if some of the boys had been out celebrating a bit too much on Sunday, but it looked a bit like that to me,” joked Frew.

Once again the manager had his say at half-time and, once again, it seemed to do the trick.

“I brought Jack Leachman on at half-time, and we seemed to have much more energy in midfield.

“Jack picked up a knee injury in pre-season, but he came on and did his job well, scoring the equaliser in the 56th minute.”

So was the Side boss happier this week than following the Cray Wanderers defeat last week, when he described the performance as the worst he’d seen?

“Look, if somebody had told me pre-season that we’d be in this position after six games, I’d have bitten their hand off,” he said.

“I can’t ask more from my boys to be fair, so I’m very happy.”
