Frew’s men set to host Maldon at new base

Barkingside’s tough start to the Ryman One North season continues as they welcome Maldon to Cricklefield Stadium tonight, but manager Matt Frew is relishing the occasion.

Side will be playing Ryman One North football for the first time at their new home, after moving from Oakside during the summer.

And the chance for Frew’s team to upset one of the promotion candidates so early on in the season is an exciting prospect.

After losing to relegated Ryman Premier side Thamesmead Town on Saturday, Barkingside’s boss is expecting another close encounter tonight.

He said: “Another tough game, it doesn’t get any easier, but I don’t see why we can’t beat Maldon.

“They are always talked about as promotion candidates because of the money they have and they will be a tough side, but we are under no pressure.

“It is their team with the budget and they have all the pressure to beat us and it definitely makes it sweeter when we do beat these teams.”

Monday nights at Oakside last season generated various high attendances and Frew doesn’t see why the move to Cricklefield will change that.

The Side boss is hoping for a good crowd this evening and believes the exciting names on the home teamsheet are even more reason for fans to come.

“It will be good to play our first home league match at Cricklefield,” he added.

“I hope we can get a good crowd and I don’t see why we wouldn’t get one. There are no other teams that play on Mondays.

“There are always managers from our leagues that come down and managers from other leagues and groundhoppers, so hopefully our move doesn’t jeopardise the support we were getting last season and it shouldn’t.

“The names on the teamsheet should attract people as well with Steve Carvell, Calvin Poku, Joe Ellul, Matt Gulfer, plus new signings like John Bricknell – the list goes on.”

Although Barkingside lost at the weekend, Frew was so impressed with their first-half display he is confident they can enjoy a successful season.

The Side manager believes getting that first win is crucial but will not be pushing any panic buttons should they not get it this evening.

He added: “Winning breeds confidence and we need that first win under our belts and hopefully it is tonight, but if not there are a lot of games left.

“We won’t be pushing any panic buttons yet because I looked at the teams beaten at the weekend and was shocked. It will be another tight league, but I strongly believe we won’t be battling relegation again like we were last season.”
