Barkingside are in Ryman North action tonight (Tuesday) with a trip to Bromley to face Cray Wanderers, on the back of a great win against Brentwood on Saturday.

Manager Matt Frew will be looking for more of the same from his squad. “It was a very feisty local derby on Saturday where we set the tempo, but I don’t know too much about tonight’s opponents.

“They play at a nice ground in Bromley, so I’m looking forward to my first visit there.”

Side started the brighter on Saturday, and Calvin Poku found the net just after the 10-muniute mark to give them the lead.

Restricting their opponents to minimal chances,Richard Oxby found Poku again who doubled Side’s lead with a left foot strike on 34 minutes.

“We’d restricted their chances, so I was delighted with our half-time lead,” said Frew. “But they came out for the second half and got a quick penalty.

“Brentwood continued their period of pressure, and they equalised with a strange one. A long throw into the box went over our keeper and he just got a touch to it, putting it in for an own-goal.”

It was then backs to the wall stuff until the manager decided to make what was to be a crucial change with about 15 minutes to play.

“I replaced John Bricknell with Chris Taylor and it paid instant dividends,” said the manager, “he rose above the Brentwood defence to head home a Matt Gulfer corner, and we were back in front.”

But it didn’t end there, explained Frew. “With about five minutes remaining Taylor got on the end of another corner to give us a two-goal win with an acrobatic shot.”

Speaking about tonight’s opposition, the Side boss said: “If people looked at the league table, they’d make us firm favourites to win, but it doesn’t work like that.

“They’ll be scrapping to get their first points of the season, but, if we can win we’ll have nine points which I’d have snapped your hand off for at the start of the season.

Frew was keeping his cards close to his chest about team selection: “I may make a few changes to freshen things up,” he said, “I’ve got 21 players to keep happy, but sometimes a little change brings a positive reaction.

“I have it in my mind, but I won’t make a final decision until the last moment tonight.”
