Frew aims to make Oakside ‘a fortress’
Barkingside welcome Dereham Town to Oakside this weekend and manager Matt Frew has called on his side to make their home ground a fortress, Side lost 1-0 to Brantham Athletic in the FA Cup preliminary round last weekend, their third successive defeat, but are looking to bounce back on Saturday against a team currently lying in 11th place in Ryman One North.
Frew said: “We’ve got Dereham next, they are just ahead of us in the league so it is a big game.
“We are back on home soil and we need a win.
“That was the plan from the start of the season [to make Oakside a fortress].
“We are setting ourselves up very well. Me and the coaches are preparing everything, it’s just the players aren’t performing.
“Players have come up to me after games and said ‘it isn’t your fault gaffer we just are not performing’, so hopefully that changes.
“I need a response on Saturday and hopefully I get it.”
Side will be without several key players at the weekend, with three vital performers from last season missing.
One positive is the return of vice-captain Richard Oxby, with Frew adding: “Chas Liddiard is missing Saturday, that is a blow. Reece Cosson is on holiday and Joe Ellul continues to be a few weeks away because of injury.
“A big plus is having Richard Oxby back. He played 15 minutes on Saturday and he is a big player for me.
“He is my vice-captain and we need his experience.”
Having played at the weekend for the first time this season, Oxby is still short of fitness.
Essex Senior League team Enfield offered him the opportunity to play for them against Takeley in midweek and if he comes through that without any lasting effects, he may start at the weekend.
Frew added: “He played for Enfield on Tuesday. as I haven’t got a reserve team and they have offered him 90 minutes.
“I will see how he does and if he gets through it fine, he’ll start on Saturday.”
