Frew looks ahead to Heybridge fixture
Barkingside are due to face Heybridge Swifts tomorrow in the Ryman One North and manager Matt Frew is hoping the game will go ahead as his side look to move away from the relegation places.
Swifts match at the weekend was postponed, but assuming the weather stays the same between now and 7.45pm tomorrow night Frew believes the game should be on.
He said: “I’m hoping it can go ahead, they have a good pitch there. I think there has been some water on it in patches, but hopefully it will be fine.
“The weather has been ok today, so we’ll see what happens between now and then. Hopefully it stays the same.”
If the match is given the green light, Side will be confident ahead of facing the promotion-chasing Swifts, despite suffering six successive league defeats.
Earlier in the campaign Barkingside recorded arguably their result of the season against Heybridge Swifts with a 3-2 win at Oakside.
It was a memorable night for Frew and although he expects another tough game, he is sure it will give his players belief.
“It is going to be a tough game but like I say every week they are all tough games this year,” he added.
“We beat them earlier in the season when we played and that night it seemed like everything clicked. They are up there and they will be all season so it was a great night.
“I feel we have improved and the squad has got stronger since we beat them. Jody Brown is over there now, he’s been at Maldon and has managed my brother so I know he is a good manager.
“We’ll go there and, like we always do, try to give a good account of ourselves and try to entertain. And hopefully we can get something.”
Barkingside got some valuable game time on Saturday despite their home clash with Erith & Belvedere being called off due to a waterlogged Oakside pitch as they played a friendly against Bowers & Pitsea.
The game against the Essex Senior League team was played on a 3G pitch in Laindon and Side ran out 4-2 winners.
Frew was satisfied with the outcome, adding: “We played a friendly at the weekend which keeps us sharp and hopefully gives us an edge for tomorrow night.
“The lads are working hard and lots of positives came from the friendly against Bowers.”
