Barkingside manager Matt Frew hailed his side after their 5-0 FA Cup triumph over Eastern Counties Premier Division outfit Wivenhoe Town and dedicated the victory to chairman Jimmy Flanagan.

Lewis Francis bagged a brace, alongside goals from Dan Callaway, Steve Carvell and captain Matt Gulfer, as Side progressed to the first qualifying round and pocketed £1,925 in prize money.

Frew felt the victory was perhaps the biggest of his managerial career and expressed his delight at being able to reward his chairman with some much deserved funds.

“The result on Saturday was massive for the football club and it was all for the chairman,” said Frew.

“I said to him after the game ‘that one is for you’. I want to win every game, but Saturday was probably my biggest result as Barkingside manager because I’d never made it past the first round of the FA Cup.

“I said to the boys we needed to do it for the chairman. He puts so much of his own money into the club and we needed to win it to give some back to him. My team talk was all about him and the boys responded.”

Side put the FA Cup clash to bed in the first half at Cricklefield Stadium as they came in four goals ahead at the break.

Francis scored his first after just five minutes before Callaway extended the advantage with nine minutes gone.

Carvell scored the third in the 34th minute before Francis added his second three minutes before the interval.

Gulfer scored just five minutes into the second period to conclude the scoring and Frew was pleased with the level of professionalism his team displayed, adding: “The last few months, and years to be honest, my boys seem to be a slow starting team, but on Saturday it was completely different.

“We set out our stall out early doors and being 4-0 up at half time we were in control of the second half, but we didn’t let it slip.

“The boys were very professional and no disrespect to Wivenhoe, they weren’t the strongest opposition, but we did a job.

“We got a nice reward and Jimmy has already said he will give the players some back by treating them to a night out.”

Side return to action tomorrow when they visit Wroxham in Ryman One North.
